Tampa Bay Derby: As the road to the 147th Kentucky Derby rolls along, US Racing looks back at some history of many of the prep races that now offer qualifying points to Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs on May 1.
By Margaret Ransom
Since it was first contested in 1981, the Tampa Bay Derby (G2) has produced two winners of the Kentucky Derby (G1) — Street Sense – who won – captured the Derby in 2007 and Super Saver – third in this prep – won the Derby in 2010.
It has, however, produced a significant number of Derby starters and on Saturday a field of 12 sophomores, led by Frank Fletcher Racing’s Sam F. Davis Sakes (G3) winner Candy Man Rocket, will seek to improve on the Run for the Roses statistics.
The 1 1/16-mile race is sponsored by Lambholm South, a thoroughbred nursery and training center in Florida. American financier and businessman Jack Dreyfus founded Hobeau Farm in the 1960s and the facility was purchased by longtime horseman Roy S. Lerman in the mid-2000s and added to the previous Lambholm South facility once known as Allen Paulson’s Brookside Farm. Lerman opened Lambholm South in 2000 and it’s been one of the more successful operations in the Ocala area.
Tapwrit won this race in 2017 before going on to win the Belmont Stakes (G1) and Verrazano won the Tampa Bay Derby before winning the Wood Memorial and Haskell Invitational in 2013. Two years ago, Tacitus won the Tampa Bay Derby before taking the Wood Memorial (G2) and finishing third in the Kentucky Derby. He also set the stakes record for the 1 1/16-mile race when he logged 1:41.90.
Last year, King Guillermo stunned the field and posted a 4 ¾-length upset at odds of nearly 50-1 before finishing a game second to Nadal in the Arkansas Derby (G1). The Uncle Mo colt, who is owned by former baseball player Victor Martinez and his Victoria Ranch, hasn’t won a race since and spent most of last year on the sideline, including being scratched from the Derby [Sept. 5] due to illness. King Guillermo is set to run in the Santa Anita Handicap (G1) on Saturday.
In Saturday’s Tampa Bay Derby, the same connections will send 15-1 outsider King Of Dreams off a maiden victory at Gulfstream on Jan. 30.
The Tampa Bay Derby offers “Road to the Derby” qualifying points of 50-20-10-5 to the top-four finishers.
Six jockeys – Daniel Centeno, Eibar Coa, Richard Migliore, Pat Day, John Velazquez, and Jose Ortiz each have ridden two winners, while trainer Todd Pletcher has saddled five winners, including four of the last eight (Limehouse, 2004; Verrazano, 2013; Carpe Diem, 2015; Destin, 2016; and Tapwrit, 2017).
Five winners of the Sam F. Davis, the traditional prep for this race, have gone on to win the Tampa Bay Derby — Phantom Jet (1987), Speedy Cure (1991), Marco Bay (1993), Thundering Storm (1996) and Burning Roma (2001).
Heavy rain is expected in the Tampa area on Saturday with high temperatures in the mid-60s. The Tampa Bay Derby is one of five big stakes races – four graded — on the card and will be race 11 with a post time of 5:25 p.m. ET.

We’re just over a week away from “the most exciting two minutes in sports.” For a time, it seemed as if Nevada’s sportsbooks would be unable to offer odds on the biggest horse race of the year. Fortunately, it’s now possible to bet on the Kentucky Derby in Nevada again.
As many know, this is one of the most-wagered-on events of the year. The 2020 Kentucky Derby will certainly be different from ones in the past, yet it’s still likely to draw in a huge number of bets. Today, we’re going to look at why Nevada is now being allowed to offer wagers on this race.
Let’s get into it!
Putting On the 2020 Kentucky Derby Hasn’t Been Easy
In March, the entire sports and entertainment industry came to a screeching halt. Horse race tracks were immediately forced to shut down and all major races were delayed until further notice. At that time, no one could say how long the regulations would last for.
Many felt that by May, racing events would resume. Time went on, however, and most of the country’s regulations either stayed in place or intensified. By mid-April, it became clear that it was impossible to host the 2020 Kentucky Derby on its original date.
For the first time since 1945, the Kentucky Derby was forced to be rescheduled. Event organizers announced the race would instead be held on September 5th. Hope was that by this time, fans would be allowed in the stands and some sense of normalcy would be back.
Several ideas were put forward on how to safely hold this event. Under normal circumstances, it draws in thousands of spectators into a small area to eat, drink, and enjoy the atmosphere. Organizers eventually agreed to allow just 14% capacity in the stands.
Those attending the race will notice some major changes. Masks will be required at all times, except while eating and drinking. The famous mint juleps will still be offered in disposable cups and only pre-packaged foods will be available.
It took a tremendous amount of effort to organize this year’s Derby. News has just broken that fans based in Nevada will now be given permission to bet on the race winners.
Gaming Commission Approves Amendment to Bet on the Kentucky Derby in Nevada
The popularity of sports betting is skyrocketing around the United States. Horse race betting remains one of the most popular options and many consider Nevada the mecca for this form of gambling. Incredibly, it seemed as if it would be impossible to bet on the Kentucky Derby in Nevada this year.
In the past, Nevada’s sportsbooks could only offer bets on events of which results were given by licensed disseminators. This year’s Kentucky Derby won’t have that luxury. Instead, sportsbooks will need to rely on nationally televised broadcasts for the results.
This proved to be a major issue for Nevada’s many sports betting companies. Without odds on the race, they’d lose out on a massive amount of much-needed revenue. The Nevada Gaming Commission has just officially approved an amendment that allows wagering on this event.
Many regulators fear this will result in betting scams. Broadcast delays may result in what’s known as “past-posting,” betting on an event after it has begun. Some of Nevada’s gaming commissioners now want to organize a workshop to come up with a more permanent solution for situations like this one.
“We want to be able to bet (on the Kentucky Derby), but we also want a workshop,” Commission Chairman John Moran said.“Roll up your sleeves and get ready to have some workshops.”
Racing fans have to be happy. It’s now officially possible to bet on the Kentucky Derby in Nevada through most sportsbooks. But what about those located outside of Nevada?
